In early 2003, Alpha Engineering Records stumbled into the worst pub in the worst part of Birmingham. The only people there who didn't want to stab us (at least before they finished their drinks) were a band called Locus Of Control. Their music was heavy, personal and raw. It was more than the sum of its parts. It spoke straight to you. It was metal but it wasn't macho. It was direct but it wasn't basic. It was virtuosic without being showy. We liked it.
Locus Of Control went on to top the UK independent rock charts, tour the country with hardcore heroes like ThisGirl, Goldfinger, Sikth, Queen Adreena, Raging Speenhorn, Midasuno and Jetplane Landing. They were featured in NME, KERRANG, Rocksound and Metal Hammer as well as appearing on BBC Radio 1, ScuzzTV, KerrangTV and the Amp.
Locus Of Control were Spen Ward (freeze dried vocals), Matt Pullen (consistently original blistering guitar work), Jim Pullen (lynchpin distorted bass) and Rhodri Jones (probably the best unknown drummer in the UK). Locus Of Control released two showstopping singles and a killer album before they split up in 2006 due to singer Spen Ward's health problems. The remaining members went on to form Fortune Favours.
